Barrow County Sheriff Judd Smith revealed in a press conference that calls to the police came in one after the other from about 9:30 a.m.

 

 

Although police confirmed that several people were injured, the exact number of casualties and the severity of the injuries could not be released at this time. Sergeant Smith said cautiously that the investigation into the incident was in full swing and more details would be made available to the public. He stated bluntly, “This is an extremely complex investigation and we are facing the evils of it head on.”

Shortly after the incident, Abaraki High School sent an urgent message to parents of students via text message, informing them that the school was on strict lockdown and urging them not to visit the school. The school's announcement read, “Following the reported shooting, Abarachi High School is now on strict lockdown and law enforcement has arrived on the scene. Parents are asked not to attempt to visit the school at this time as police are doing their best to secure the area.”

 

 

While the exact number of injuries and details of the injuries have not been fully disclosed, witnesses at the scene claim to have seen at least one injured person being carried to the hospital in a helicopter. According to Atlanta's Fox - 5 television station, at least one of the injured was airlifted to a hospital for treatment, while another was carried in an ambulance in an unknown condition. Grady Hospital in Atlanta also confirmed admitting a gunshot victim from Abarachi High School.

Parents have been allowed to pick up their children and leave the school, while other schools throughout the Barrow County School District are on “soft lockdown” to ensure the safety of all. The district is strongly urging parents to refrain from going to the schools during the current situation so as not to interfere with police work.
